“Age of earthquakes” is a book written by Douglas Coupland, Hans-Ulrich Obrist, and Shumon Basar, that talks about the influence of technology on culture. The 2nd project of the first year of the BA (hons) degree asked students to choose a passage of the book and interpret visually.
“…Maybe its okay to no longer want to be an individual…” was the quote of my choice. The concepts of individuality and collective seemed as interesting contrasts to explore visually. During the initial stages of this project, I was in a family vacation to Greece, the place where people started to create communities, in other words the act of individuals coming together. This lead me to consider the whole notion of nation, and started to explore the concept of flags. A single visual object that represents a whole.
